Its been a practice by most of us to use cotton swabs to clear excess ear wax and debris in the ear. Anyone from the field of audiology can tell you the consequences of its excessive usage. From getting the eardrums punctured to super impacted ear wax, the consequences could be even more adverse!
There are special cells in the ear canal that produces cerumen, commonly known as ear wax. For certain people, the accumulation of ear wax is quite faster and that might result in some degree of hearing loss or even pain in some cases. It is recommended to see an audiologist instead of taking up “do it yourself” practices. Cotton swabs can do more harm than good.
A swab can easily reach the eardrum, the eardrum is so delicate, it can be easily ruptured by using even a very gentle pressure is applied while using a swab. Ask anyone who has experienced a punctured eardrum – it isn’t a pleasant experience. The pain is quite severe and the ear may also leak a clear fluid in certain cases!
It isn’t necessary to clean the ear at all, during hair-shower on a regular basis, enough water enters into the ear that could loosen the ear wax that is accumulated in excess. Also, the skin grows in the outward direction spirally pushing the excess earwax out of the ear. In case of excessive wax, a little peroxide is mixed with water and injected into the ear by the audiologist. This process of removing earwax is mostly painless. If excessive ear waxing is frequent, it is recommended to take instructions of the physician to clear it at home.
